Legal Services on a Budget

We realize that family law matters can be costly. If you choose not to retain a family lawyer, that does not mean you have to deal with your matter alone.

Rule 3.2 of the Rules of Professional Conduct permits lawyers to provide legal services on a Limited Scope Retainer.  Rule 4 of the Family Law Rules recognizes these kinds of retainers.  In such arrangements, you determine what work you want the lawyer to perform, according to your needs and your budget.

This can include hiring a lawyer to:

  • Provide legal advice;
  • Review court documents;
  • Draft court documents;
  • Calculate support and property division;
  • Provide legal advice;
  • Negotiate on your behalf;
  • Appear at conferences, motions, or trial

In many cases, the legal costs associated with a family matter soon outstrip any financial benefit to be received, which can have long-term effects on your retirement planning and your children’s education. This form of representation has the advantage of keeping as much money in your family, while still having a legal team available at every step.
